Spraying vs rolling exterior

July 31, 2013

Advantages of spraying on exteriors
  • More even coat

  • Less flashing

  • Able to apply a heavier coat increasing mill thickness of coating.

Disadvantages of spraying on exteriors

  • Masking of unpainted surfaces, this time is usually offset by painting time being quicker.

  • Overspray, this is only a concern if unpainted surfaces are not masked properly.

  • Can’t spray when it is windy.

Overall spraying does a better job than brushing and rolling due to the fact it can apply more product evenly onto the substrate. It is important that the a good sprayer is doing the job and that the unpainted areas are protected. Sometimes it is not possible to spray due to weather conditions or the area that is being painted.
